Both marriage and civil partnership provide legal recognition of a couple’s relationship and give them similar rights and responsibilities as married couples. However, there are some legal differences between the two forms of union, for example, the process of dissolution (divorce) differs and the language used in the ceremony is not the same.
As of 2021, the UK government announced that opposite sex couples will be able to form a civil partnership.
