HC Junks Govt’s ‘Local’ Tag For PG Medical Admissions in Telangana

The Telangana High Court has recently revoked the state government’s order mandating at least four consecutive schooling years in the state for availing state quota seats in PG medical admissions 2024. This decision comes after 94 NEET PG aspirants filed petitions against the new Telangana local residency rule. The court struck down an amendment to Rule VIII (ii) of the Telangana Medical Colleges (Admission into Postgraduate Medical Courses) Rules, 2021, which required PG medical aspirants to have studied at least four consecutive schooling years in the state for state quota seats.

The court’s decision is seen as a positive judgment in favor of the students, with around 200 to 300 aspirants affected by the four-year study criterion introduced by the Telangana government at the last minute. The petitioners argued that the new domicile rule marked around 200 Telangana medical graduates from other states as non-local everywhere in the country.

It’s worth noting that the Telangana High Court had earlier issued notices to the State Government and Kaloji Narayana Rao University for Health Sciences (KNRUHS) on a plea challenging the provision of reservation for local candidates for postgraduate medical admission for 2024-2025. However, the court has now junked the plea challenging the 100% reservation of MBBS and BDS seats for local candidates under the competent authority quota.
