The doctrine of Res judicata is of universal application and is based on the principle that Public Policy demands that one cause should not be tried for the second time between the same parties and there must be an end of litigation.

This principle applies to criminal proceedings and it is not allowed in the stage of the same proceedings to try a person for an offence for which he has been acquitted. Res judicata means a case that has already been decided or a matter settled by a decision or judgment.
